Operable Walls for Schools

Acoustic operable wall systems built for daily use in Victorian school environments, covering classrooms, assembly halls, multipurpose spaces, and libraries.

Acoustic ratings for school environments

The acoustic requirement for school operable walls depends on the adjacent spaces and simultaneous use case. Rw 40 is the standard minimum for dividing classrooms that will operate simultaneously. At this rating, speech from the adjacent room is present but not intelligible. For hall-to-classroom divisions, drama rooms, or spaces used for examinations, Rw 45 is the appropriate starting point.

Acoustic performance in schools is regulated under the NCC and referenced by the Department of Education's design guidelines. We can provide acoustic test reports formatted for inclusion in BCA documentation and NAPLAN compliance submissions.

Built for daily operation

School operable walls are deployed and retracted multiple times per day, often by non-specialist staff including teachers and administration. Our school systems are specified with reinforced seal mechanisms, heavy-duty trolleys, and panel finishes rated for high-traffic commercial environments.

Panel faces in school settings are typically specified in impact-resistant melamine or commercial-grade laminate rather than fabric or veneer, as these finishes withstand contact, cleaning agents, and the occasional impact that comes with high-use spaces.

Child-safe operation

All panel edges are fully sealed and finished with no exposed hardware or pinch points during operation. Bottom seals deploy with controlled pressure and retract cleanly from the floor plane. For primary school environments, we recommend manual systems with handle heights specified for adult operation. Panels should not be operable by students without staff supervision.

Where automated systems are required in school settings, we specify key-switch activation or code-protected wall panels to prevent unsupervised operation.

Installation around school terms

Most school installations are scheduled during school holidays to minimise disruption to students and staff. We work with school business managers and project coordinators to plan installation windows that align with term calendars, and our 2–5 day on-site installation period makes holiday scheduling practical for most system sizes.

For large-scale multi-classroom projects that cannot be completed in a single holiday period, we can stage the installation across consecutive breaks. Staged delivery and installation is factored into the project programme at the time of quotation.
